One hundred and fifty-two years ago, the country celebrated the abolition of slavery and the start of a new chapter in African-American history marked by freedom.
On Saturday, Winston-Salem residents gathered downtown as a reminder of how far we’ve come.

Reggie,
Sorry for this late email - back from honeymoon Friday then it was wild and wooly getting my things moved into Sallie's house this weekend. Then Monday back at work was crazier than I thought it would be.
Wanted to tell you that you guys were incredible! We have heard more praises from friends about your music, which didn't surprise me a bit! You guys were on the button with your selections and we couldn't have hoped for any more perfect music.
Sallie and I are indebted to you and your trio. You created the perfect atmosphere our reception.
It was wonderful seeing you again and I hope to cross paths with you sooner this time around.
Thanks so much Reggie.
Bob and Sallie

Reggie Buie Trio - The First Time
What is often categorized as smooth jazz is usually not jazz at all, at least in its purest form. Too often, generic adult contemporary is posing as smooth jazz or some new age muzak with piano and horns. The same cannot be said of the Reggie Buie Trio. Not only is this smooth jazz, but it’s real jazz as well. Buie and his mates are traditionalists. There are no concessions to pop here; even the cover of “Betcha, By Golly Wow” doesn’t have the slick, modern studio polish that you’d expect. Piano, upright bass, drums, percussion, saxophone and trumpet are the tools of the Trio’s magic. They sound like the cool cats you would’ve expected to hang out in smoke-filled bars decades ago. Yet, judging from the booklet’s photos, Buie has some relative youngsters on his side.
Reviews of mostly instrumental pieces are the most difficult to write, because the technical aspects will be completely oblivious to Average Joe, and the music should be experienced, not read about. A lot of love and respect went into the recording of this album, especially for the material that is remade so professionally and engagingly here. http://ink19.com/2006/05/magazine/music-reviews/the-reggie-buie-trio

Reggie Buie Trio - The First Time
BY
ROBERT SUTTON,
Published: August 27, 2006
There is magic in how Reggie Buie brings his piano keys to life, allowing light and shade to emanate from each lively performance. One can hear this on The First Time in the adrenaline rush of "Nica's Dream," the scenic reflection of "Georgia," and the hopeless romanticism of "Betcha, By Golly Wow."
Hailing from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the members of the Reggie Buie Trio are veterans of the steakhouse circuit, familiar to local jazz enthusiasts and fellow musicians but not well-known nationally. Buie, bassist Nathan Scott and drummer Michael Fowler comprise a sharply oiled machine, taking engaging improvisational turns on this soothing collection of covers.
Distancing themselves from studio slickness, the trio opts for a live feel. This decision works well for the band, because the focus here is on the chemistry and the give and take between the musicians. Although Buie's piano playing provides the foundation for these songs, his bandmates are given numerous moments to shine—like Scott's pulsating bass on "My Romance and Fowler's energetic drums on "Nica's Dream.
Remaking the immaculate soul classic "Betcha, By Golly Wow takes tremendous courage to attempt and top-drawer talent to pull off, but Buie's trio manages to transform it into a moving lounge piece with guest vocals from Charlene Williams. Some critics have lamented that Williams' voice is too far back into the mix or shouldn't have been included in the first place, because the music carried enough emotion on its own. While those are valid points, it's hard to hear this piece without that golden famous chorus, and Williams provides a soaring rendition.
